LIFE REWARDS | The everyday solution to a well-trained dog

jcdogtrainer

The world is jam packed with rewarding consequences and activities that YOUR dog wants to take advantage of, I mean it’s got everything your canine companion could ever want:

  1. Things to chase, rag and track ✔️

  2. Items to sniff, snuffle and dig for ✔️

  3. People to approach, jump up at for treats ✔️

  4. Dogs to play, bark at and run after ✔️

  5. Sticks and rubbish to eat and chew ✔️

The list is endless...and as a dog owner you don’t want to constantly restrict and micro-manage your pup, but at the same time you’d really love it if they came away from things when you asked without making too much of a scene right?

The answer might just be life rewards 🤑 💲

Whilst it’s not always, and sometimes never appropriate for you to allow your dog to perform certain behaviours or activities (in which case I recommend you speak to a trainer or behaviourist about ways to suitably manage any issues), there can be times when these things present themselves as perfect opportunities to train up behaviours that we want more of; such as a recalls away from digging...Click below to watch the video ⤵️

The caveat...

When used right, this type of training can help work on your dog’s self control and impulses. It can support you fading out food rewards and provide behavioural outlets and activities that keep your dog well adjusted, well rounded and stimulated.... However!

Please access the situation first.

Make sure to keep yourself, your dog and others (including pesky squirrels) safe from harm.

Ask other owners for permission, understand and look out for dog body language, use a long line for management and always practise asking your dog to come away, go back and completely move on from life rewards to build an appropriate behaviour chain that will lead to a more responsive and cooperative dog. Good luck and happy training !
