The variables that impact training can be as long as a piece of sting. Motivation, age, prior experiences, personalities, levels of rest, hydration, diet, hormones...the list goes on.
As a result there is no training length "one size fits all" kind of deal. BUT! As luck would have it, we have science to help us out...
Everyone, say hello to “The spacing effect”.
The spacing effect is a proven approach to successful learning. It states that we are better able to recall information if we learn it across a number of spread-out sessions rather than in one long go. It’s been shown to be true for many groups of people including other species such as dogs and even sea slugs.
So, what’s my advice?
Training should be fun, so be conscientious of the dog you have in front of you at that moment in time. It might not be the same level of dog you had yesterday for whatever reason. Pay attention how you are both feeling and keep an eye out for changes in behaviour that tell you it's time to put the kettle on instead.
Lastly, Plan your session by breaking down criteria and giving each one the spacing effect KISS of approval:

Happy training everyone.
