Ahoy there! Fishermen know just how to bait up and get the attention of a fish. They also know how and when to strike to set the hook as well as the need to keep reeling before landing a fish safely in the net. So what's this got to do with dog training and recall ?
Well, the concept is not that much different from our dogs recall training. We need to bait the dog, to hook them and reel them in before landing them safely on a recall. So, I have put together 4 simple steps so we can reel in those perfect responses and land a prized recall every time!
Step 1: Bait For Attention š£
In the vast ocean of distractions, we need to get our dogs attention before we even consider hooking them for a recall. We start by using the best treats and pairing it with their name š
We train that reflex so when you call their name, they snap to attention and give you their focus.
Step 2: Set the Hook with the Recall Cue
Now, it's time to strike and set the hook which is your recall cue! It could be a word or a whistle but choose your recall cue wiselyājust like hooking a fish, you only get one shot š£ļø Practice, practice, practice! Generalise it to different environments and make it irresistible.
Step 3: Reel Them In š
Sometimes our dogs, like tricky fish, dart off to explore interesting scents or greet distant people or dogs. This means you have to reel them in, but remember, no need to recast your hook it's already been used so try not to say the recall cue again and again but instead, reel them in with heaps of encouragement, praise, and enthusiasm.
Step 4: Safely Land the Catch š
As your dog comes into you, it's time to land your catch safely. Dogs are more visual than auditory so I like to guide a dogs into me with a clear hand target, but your can use a lure for a polite sit. š¤² Ensure you practice at short distances so they know the drill for a smooth landing and seal the deal with a treat.
So there you have it, 4 steps to catching your dog using the fishing analogy I have used for years. Give it a go next time you're out with your pup, imagine yourself baiting their attention, setting the hook, reeling them in, and safely landing the catch.
Happy training everyone!šš¾
